creative coding for your classroom

Using exciting drone technologies, we offer a fantastic hands-on experience for your pupils that brings coding (programming) to life. Even with the host of great apps available for pupils to learn coding, we believe that the most effective and engaging learning experiences are those that offer pupils the chance to experiment with coding using physical devices. Pupils can more easily see the cause and effect of their coding decisions and this encourages them to debug (fault find) and develop their code. Our sessions cover many aspects of the core computer science elements in the Computing Curriculum and provide excellent STEM opportunities.

We will customise our package based on your school needs over either a half or full day. Our sessions are suitable for pupils across Key Stage 1 and 2, and lower Key Stage 3. During the day, we can deliver to multiple groups or classes allowing you to get the best out of our time with you.

We bring all of the resources needed for the day. All you need to provide is a suitable indoor space (a hall or gym being most appropriate) and the children! Our fleet of drones includes both aerial and land-based models and all of the coding is done on iPads using the excellent Tynker app (similar to Scratch). Working in small groups, pupils will be set challenges - creating, testing and debugging programs to control their drone.

Our DRONEday experiences are exceptional value starting at £350 for a half day experience and £450 for a full day.

the programming part

For some, the mere mention the word programming or coding can bring on a cold sweat! Coding can be complex, but with the range of apps now available and designed specifically for education, it doesn't have to be. Many of these apps use a simple drag and drop approach where blocks representing commands or instructions such as move forward, turn right, take off, flip, etc are arranged in a sequence. This approach was pioneered by 'Scratch' and has now been taken to the next level in the 'Tynker' app with the ability to program and control a range of drones.

In our sessions, your pupils will use Tynker on iPads to create, test and improve their coding sequences. Even if they haven't used Tynker or Scratch before, it really is so easy that they will pick it up in minutes.

About us

We are passionate about what we do. Based on our firm belief that children learn best when they enjoy what they are doing, all of our school sessions are designed to engage and excite. We can’t stress enough how important it is for children to have access to control physical devices using the code that they create. Without this essential link to the physical world, children often find it difficult to contextualize and understand the purpose of programming.

Our consultants have over thirty years of experience teaching across schools in Warwickshire, Coventry and Leicestershire. All are enhanced DBS checked and carry electronic proof of this.

We understand the demands on class and subject teachers and want to be able to offer you a package that will not only engage your pupils, but will help you to deliver your computing curriculum.

DRONEday packages

Every school is different and we don’t believe in a one-size fits all approach. From the point of your initial enquiry, we will work with you to develop a custom package based around key activity blocks we offer. Every DRONEday package includes:

  • Full access to our range of aerial and ground drones

  • iPads running Tynker and other blocky apps for your pupils to create and debug their code

  • Resources for the day including safety equipment for pupil use

  • Small group work (maximum group size of 4) ensuring every pupil gets a hands-on experience

  • Focused, differentiated challenges

  • Experienced education consultant

To ensure an enjoyable and safe experience for your pupils our maximum session size is 30.

Travel expenses – bookings where the total journey mileage is less than 100 miles will incur no travel expenses. Travel with a total journey mileage exceeding 100 miles will incur an additional cost that will be confirmed at the time of an enquiry. If your location is such that that our journey will be more than 90 minutes in each direction, we will need to quote for overnight accommodation. This will be charged to you at cost based on a budget hotel rate – again this will be confirmed upon you making an enquiry.

Preparing for your experience

It is important to us that your pupils have the best experience possible. We will do everything we can to ensure this, but there are a few things you need to do to ensure that the days runs smoothly:

  • Provide a suitable indoor space for the experience. For the best experience, this should be a hall or gym as these usually provide not only the floor space required, but the vertical height for aerial drones. If your hall is needed at lunchtime, we can clear our resources temporarily. It may be possible to run your day in a large classroom, but furniture would need to be fully cleared prior to us arriving to setup. If in any doubt, please discuss this with us at the time of your enquiry. Please see our sample layout for an idea of the type of space we need.

  • We need access to the room at least an hour prior to the start of the experience and usually for a similar period at the end of the day.

  • The room you provide must have provision for power. Whilst we will bring our own extension leads and multi plug blocks, ideally we like to have at least four available 13 Amp sockets.

  • If the allocated room already has projection facilities or an LCD screen, please let us know. If the room doesn’t have these facilities, we will bring an LCD projector and will either need a plain wall to project onto or alternatively, we can bring a compact screen.

  • A set of simple safety procedures will be provided at the time of booking. Please go through these with your pupils prior to the experience. We will also recap them on the day.

  • A DRONEday experience is quite noisy! Whether aerial or ground, the drones themselves do make quite a bit of (motor) noise. Additionally, your children will be very excited and particularly so during the challenges.

  • Although we are fully trained teachers, we do expect that either a teacher or teaching assistant is with us throughout the day to support and deal with any school or pupil-specific issues.

  • If we are delivering a whole day experience, we will need a 30 minute lunchbreak approximately half way through the day. We will obviously fit this in with your school day.

  • Our consultants carry an electronic version of their enhanced DBS certificate. If your school needs to see their original document, please request this prior to the date of your event.

  • Our health and safety policy and risk assessments (including COVID-secure measures) can be viewed here.

  • Our full terms and conditions can be viewed here.

CURRICULUM LINKS

Whilst their main curriculum focus is computing, DRONEdays also support and promote many other areas of the curriculum including numeracy, literacy, science and technology. They also help to develop social and communication skills along with collaborative working.

All of our experience days provide opportunities to cover the computer science aspects of the computing curriculum as shown below.

understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions

create and debug simple programs

use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs

KS1

design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts

use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output

use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs

KS2

KS3

TESTIMONIALS & CUSTOMER FEEDBACK

Year 3 and 4 Teachers, Broad Heath Primary School, Coventry

Year 4:

"Great link to our computing units re using scratch and coding the microbits, etc. consolidating and applying their learning during those units. It was fun, the children loved it, it promoted teamwork and self-led problem solving. Great link to maths with shape and space, and angles. It also promoted resilience and patience as they had to solve problems throughout.

Staff enjoyed watching the children thrive in a different environment and using different skills otherwise missing from other areas of the curriculum."

Year 3:

"The children gained a lot of confidence with programming and really enjoyed it. It was a different experience for them and allowed them to apply skills in a different way. Was lovely to see children apply some of what they already know to help them programme. Was good for my class especially for following instructions.

Personally, it was good to see all the maths skills that were being used as you don't always think about it when delivering a session. Was good to see how to deliver a session with resources and see the job roles we can give to children.

It was a lovely fun session great to do something normal and have people in working with the children."
